This article will guide you on how to calculate the Bradford Factor and enable
What is the Bradford Factor?
The Bradford Factor is a formula used to measure employee absenteeism. It is based on the theory that frequent short-term absences are more disruptive to a business than occasional long-term absences. By calculating the Bradford Factor, businesses can identify patterns in employee absences and manage them more effectively.
How is the Bradford Factor Calculated?
The Bradford Factor is calculated using the following formula:
B = S² x D
Where:
- B = Bradford Factor score
- S = Total number of spells (instances) of absence in a given period
- D = Total number of days of absence in the same period
Example Calculation
Let’s break down an example to illustrate how the Bradford Factor is calculated:
- Total Number of Spells (S): An employee has taken 4 separate periods of absence in the last 12 months.
- Total Number of Days (D): The total number of days absent across these 4 periods is 10 days.
Using the formula:
- S = 4
- D = 10
The Bradford Factor is calculated as: B = 4² x 10 = 16 x 10 = 160
So, the Bradford Factor score for this employee is 160.
Where do we calculate Bradford Factor in HRoes?
To calculate the Bradford Factor of a single employee, first go to your main Employees tab and select "Manage" next to your desired employee:
From here, select "Absence" from the top of the page, and then "Calculators" from the bottom of the resulting tab:
Once in the main Calculators tab, you can choose Bradford Factor and then manually enter the number of days and spells the employee has on their file:
You will see the default system parameters for concern in this tab also, which you can use for guidance.
